Dishwasher Not Cleaning Dishes? Here’s What to Do

Posted by Kristi Baxter

Have you ever noticed some residue at the bottom of a newly washed glass? It’s a sign that your dishwasher is not working properly. A dishwasher that’s not cleaning well is a source of frustration. You can fix some common problems with dishwashers on your own. But you need to seek a professional dishwasher repair service if the problem is persistent.

What Should You Do if Your Dishwasher is not Cleaning Properly?

Preparing food is enjoyable when you have an extra pair of hands to wash the dishes. You know you won’t have to stand over the sink to scrub the dishes after dinner.

But what if your extra pair of hands fail you?  Before the dishwasher repair technician arrives, there are a few things you can do to fix the problem.

Clean the Inside

If the dishwasher is not cleaning well, thoroughly wash its inside. A build-up of soap scum and food particles blocks the drain over time, and the particles and scum tend to appear back on your dishes after washing.

Schedule the cleaning at least once a month. When cleaning, scrub both the inside of the tub and the door seals. Ensure you remove every food particle or debris. Also, remember to do a thorough inspection around the washer and remove any dirt that you find.

Check the Chopper Blades

Chopper blades help to slice up large food particles into microscopic bits. The chopped particles easily wash down the drain, reducing the chances of clogging. Damaged blades lead to drain blockage. In turn, the dirt gets back your dishes.

If you find that your dishwasher’s chopper blade area is damaged, consider a replacement. Remember doing it on your own can complicate the problem. Instead, find a dishwasher repair professional to do the job.

Wash the Spray Arms

Clogged spray arms make your dishwasher churn out not-so-clean dishes. Food and hard water are the causes of clogged spray arms. Spin the arms anticlockwise to let them loose. You can also use a screwdriver.

Once you have removed the arms, put them inside a container with white vinegar. The vinegar helps to remove the hard water debris and food particles. Then proceed to unclog the spray arms. You can use a steel wire to remove the dirt. Finally, reinstall the arms and rinse them by running a cycle without dishes.

Adjust the Water Temperature

Tepid water temperature causes your dishwasher to churn out half-cleaned dishes. Ensure that you check and adjust the temperatures. To do so, begin by shutting off the water heater at the electrical panel. Then proceed to open the access panel and check the temperature reading.

Set the heater at 120 degrees. If the dishwasher fails to function correctly after the adjustment, replace the heating system. Make sure to involve a dishwasher repair expert.
